5 Things That Are Actually Worth Spending Money On:

  • by

I have been seeing a lot of people on social media talking about things worth spending money on. I agree with some of the things they think are worth the money, and I disagree with others (something completely normal with every piece of media).

I thought it would be fun and interesting to do my own take on this trend. Because while I am all for saving money and being intentional with your spending, I don’t think being good with money means you have to avoid spending it altogether.

There are some things that I genuinely think are worth paying for. These are five things I personally don’t mind spending money on.

1. Education

I believe in the value of education. When my teachers were preaching that education is the key to success, I believed them, and I still do.

There is an interesting statistic from Ramsey Solutions’ National Study of Millionaires. Of the more than 10,000 U.S. millionaires surveyed, 88% had graduated from college, and 52% had earned a master’s or doctoral degree.

Obviously, this doesn’t mean that going to college automatically makes you rich. After all, correlation does not equal causation. And there are plenty of successful people who didn’t go to college.

But I think that getting an education is valuable for reasons that go beyond money.

I think going to college is important because it can expand your worldview, especially if you aren’t from a privileged background. Because at school you don’t just get an education; you get exposed to ideas, people, experiences, and opportunities that might not be available back home.

Going to college can show you that there is a world out there that is much bigger than anything you have ever imagined. Sometimes, you don’t know what is possible for you until you are exposed to it.

And I think that alone makes education worth spending money on.

2. Convenience

Convenience is currently catching a lot of strays in the finance world. People think that paying to get your groceries delivered or getting an Uber is a complete waste of money. I am trying to save money, so I tried to take on that mindset for a bit.

And, reader, it did not last.

Within a few days, I was back to my Ubers and grocery deliveries.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t do this irresponsibly. I don’t Uber everywhere I go, or order takeout every day. But when I am short on time or too tired to do something, I will pay for convenience.

And honestly, I don’t think there is anything wrong with that.

Your time and energy are valuable. So, if you can afford to, pay for the cleaner, buy the pre-cut fruit, use the meal delivery service, and get the coffee instead of making it at home.

I’m not saying you should spend money on every convenience available to you. But if paying someone else to do something gives you back time and energy that you actually need, I think that is money well spent.

3. Good Jeans

I am not really a fashion girlie, although I aspire to be one.

Suffice to say, I don’t spend a lot of money on clothes. I have tried on clothes that looked absolutely majestic on me, only to put them back because I couldn’t bring myself to spend that much money on them.

But I think a good pair of jeans is worth it.

Jeans are one of those things that you can wear over and over again. If you find a pair that fits you really well and makes you feel good, you can build so many outfits around them. You can dress them up, dress them down, wear them with sneakers, heels, a T-shirt, a nice top- you get the idea.

So while I don’t think you need to spend a fortune on every item in your closet, I do think it’s worth finding a really good pair of jeans that you absolutely love.

4. Gifts

I like to say that if I have never spent money on you, do I even love you?

I like spoiling friends, family, acquaintances, and even strangers with little gifts. I do this even if I can’t really afford to. I just think that the smiles on their faces are worth every cent.

Now, I am not saying you should go into debt buying gifts for people. There is a difference between being generous and being financially irresponsible.

But I think sometimes we get so caught up in the idea that every cent we spend should be used to improve our own financial position that we forget that money can also be used to make other people happy.

A thoughtful gift doesn’t have to be expensive. Sometimes it’s a little something you saw in a shop and immediately thought of someone. Sometimes it’s buying your friend lunch; sometimes it’s flowers or simply showing up with their favourite snack.

I don’t think every purchase needs to be an investment. Sometimes, the return is seeing someone you love smile.

5. Subscriptions

I have a complicated relationship with subscriptions.

On one hand, they are incredibly easy to justify. It’s only $15. It’s only $20. It’s only $25. And then you look at your bank statement and realise that you are paying for 17 different things you barely use.

But I do think some subscriptions are worth paying for. If you use something regularly, it makes your life easier, or it brings you genuine enjoyment, I don’t see why you shouldn’t pay for it. But that’s just me.

At the end of the day, I don’t think being good with money means never spending it. There are plenty of things I would happily save money on, but there are also things I think are worth paying for.

What are some things that you think are worth the money?
