Waking up early can feel impossible, especially when your bed is warm and your alarm is screaming at you. But learning how to wake up at 5am can completely transform your day, giving you hours of uninterrupted focus, energy, and productivity before the world even wakes up.
In this guide, I’ll share practical strategies and small habits that make it easier to rise early, even if you’re not naturally a morning person.
1. Find your why
Before we even get to how to wake up at 5am, you need to be clear on why you want to wake up at 5am. Waking up at 5am is difficult. To persist, you are going to need a strong why. You will need it when it is freezing outside, and your blankets are super warm. You will need it when you have absolutely no energy to do anything. Your why will make waking up early feel meaningful.
2. Go to bed early
You cannot scroll on TikTok till 3 am, then expect yourself to wake up and hit the gym at 5am. Waking up early begins the night before. You need to prep yourself for this mission. And that includes going to sleep at a reasonable hour.
You need to set a bedtime alarm 30 minutes before you have to go to sleep, so that every night you are reminded to get enough sleep. This way you won’t be a zombie in the morning. Remember, waking up early does not permit you to sacrifice your sleep.
3. Plan your morning

There has to be a point to you waking up early, otherwise it is just torture. You need to plan your morning so that you are not freezing your butt at 5am and wondering why you are even up. Maybe you need time to work on your business before going to work. Or you want to carve out time in your day to exercise. Or you just want to read your book without any interruptions.
The day before, create a clear plan for the tasks you want to accomplish with the extra hours that waking up early will give you.
4. Start small
Do not expect yourself to go from waking up at noon every day to waking up at 5am. You have to start small for this habit to last. Start by waking up 30 minutes earlier for a week, then an hour earlier the week after, and so on until you get to 5am.
Give your body and mind time to gradually adapt to your new waking time. This way, you will definitely stick to waking at 5am because it won’t be a shock to your system.
5. Put your phone in a different room
We are very good at snoozing our alarms. And why wouldn’t we? The hour of sleep right before our alarm is the best thing since sliced bread. But we are ambitious women with dreams that require us to wake up. So we need to take measurements to ensure that we don’t sabotage our efforts.
One simple way to make waking up easier is to put your phone in a different room so that you have to get up to turn off your alarm. This will make it way less likely for you to snooze. The walk to get your phone will energize you a bit. And an added benefit of this tip is that you won’t be able to scroll on your phone since it will be another room. Which means you will sleep early.
6. Do something to wake you up

I used to meditate immediately when I got up. And I cannot tell you the number of times I would fall asleep while meditating. I had to learn the hard way that the order of my morning routine matters.
Now I dance and sing immediately after getting up. My alarm is connected to my Spotify playlist. So, every morning I am woken up by my favourite happy songs. I sing and dance as I make my bed and get ready to exercise. It is a huge dopamine boost.
You don’t have to dance around your room if that’s not your style or you have a husband you don’t want to wake up. But you have to do something that will immediately wake you up. That can be washing your face, brushing your teeth, or working out. The key is to get your body moving and your mind alert right from the start
7. Keep a habit tracker
Keep a habit tracker and cross it off every time that you wake up at 5am. This will motivate you to keep going because you won’t want to break the streak. It will also invoke pride in yourself, which will fuel you to keep going.
8. Be patient
Do not quit too soon. Habits take time and effort to form. Give yourself grace. And be patient with yourself. Remember that everything is hard before it is easy.
I hope you found the tips helpful. It is really awesome of you to want to improve your life. I am so proud of you.
